Pearl River - Drinking Water Quality

The Pearl River or Zhu Jiang (Chinese) is an extensive river system in southern China. Measured from the farthest reaches of the Xi Jiang, the Pearl River system is China's third longest river (2,400 KM, after the Yangtze River and the Yellow river, and the second largest by volume (after the Yangtze). The Pearl River estuary, Bocca Tigris, is regularly dredged so as to keep it open for ocean vessels. The mouth of the river forms a large bay in the southeast of the delta, the Zhujiang Kou. The bay seperates Macau and Zhuhai from Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

The Pearl River is named this because of all the pearl colored shells that lie at the bottom of the river in the section that flows through the city of Guangzhou.

The Pearl River delta has an estimated population (2010) of 40.0 million over 7,700 square miles.

Deterioration of drinking water quality continues to be a major problem in China. Continuous emissions from manufacturing are the largest contributor to lower drinking water quality across the People's Republic. Also the introduction of poorly treated sewage, industrial spills, and extensive use of agricultural fertilizers and pesticides have proven to be a major contribution.

Volumes of one million gallons per day can be shipped from this pristine bulk water supply. Bulk water can be shipped in food-grade tankers up to 28,000 dead weight tons.
